⅛ One Eighth Symbol
The one-eighth symbol (⅛) is a single ready-made character for 1/8 — common in imperial measurements, where an eighth of an inch is a standard step.

How to type ⅛ (One Eighth Symbol)
Alt + 8539 works in apps that accept decimal-Unicode Alt input (Word among them). There is no short Alt + 0nnn code. Elsewhere press Win + . (period) and search “one eighth”, or copy ⅛ above.
No default keystroke. Open Character Viewer (Control + Cmd + Space) and search “one eighth”, or copy ⅛ above.
Type 215B, then press Alt + X. Typing 1/8 and a space does not autocorrect — Word's fraction AutoFormat only covers ¼, ½ and ¾.
Insert → Special characters, then search “one eighth” or “vulgar fraction”.
In math mode use \frac{1}{8}; \tfrac{1}{8} keeps it inline-sized for running text.
Usage
- ⅛ is the ready-made character for an eighth: a ⅛ inch drill bit, ⅛ teaspoon, ⅛ of a turn.
- Eighths are the natural steps of imperial measurement, so Unicode ships the whole run — ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞ — in the Number Forms block. A tape measure marked in eighths is exactly why these characters exist.
- ⅛ = 0.125 exactly. Unlike ⅓, an eighth is a power-of-two denominator, so it has a finite decimal and is represented exactly in binary floating point too.
- Not to be confused with music: an eighth note is ♪ (U+266A) and an eighth rest is 𝄾 (U+1D13E). Those are notation for note duration, not the fraction ⅛.
